Breaking News: New swine flu hits Arizona

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed Arizona’s first case of the new swine flu, said Robert Resendes, director of Yavapai County Community Health Services.

Resendes said he doesn’t know yet which county the case is from.

The CDC is investigating three more Arizona cases and those results are should hit within the next 24 hours.

State sends four suspicious flu cases from Arizona to CDC for testing

As the number of confirmed cases of the new swine flu virus continues to rise in the United States, the biggest problem health officials are facing currently in the ongoing outbreak is getting timely testing results, state and local health officials said Tuesday.

The Arizona Department of Health Services has sent four suspicious Arizona flu samples to the Centers for Disease Control lab for additional testing. The samples are of an undetermined subtype, said ADHS spokeswoman Laura Oxley Tuesday. CDC testing will determine whether the strain is the new variation of the swine flu virus.

Prescott Valley historian writes book for heritage series

Thousands of years before homes and box stores dotted the Prescott Valley landscape, lava flowed from a volcano on what is now Glassford Hill, mammoths roamed and prehistoric people hunted abundant wildlife.

Local historian Jean Cross explores the depths of the area’s history in her new book, “Prescott Valley,” published by Arcadia Press as part of a heritage series that looks at people and towns across the country called “Images of America.”

Bashas’ chain closing Prescott store

PRESCOTT - Chris Albers left the Bashas’ market in the Frontier Village Center Monday afternoon to load some groceries into her car.

That’s when the Cordes Junction resident found out that the store is on the Chandler-based supermarket chain’s list of looming closures.

“It’s like the home-town (grocery) store and now it’s going away,” she said. “My gosh, I’ve raised my kids on Bashas’ food.”

Spring Valley woman claims $5M lottery jackpot

PHOENIX - A Spring Valley woman has come forward to claim the $5 million jackpot in the Arizona Lottery’s “The Pick” game.

Linda Ronnebaum said she bought her winning ticket for the April 8 drawing at Fry’s grocery store in Prescott Valley.
