Arizona Aircraft Expo is Friday & Saturday at Love Field

PRESCOTT - The first event of the Arizona Aircraft Expo will take place at Prescott’s Ernest A. Love Field this week.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, models of the newest general-aviation aircraft will be on display at the airport’s fixed base operator, Legend Aviation, 2020 Clubhouse Dr.

Prospective buyers and the general public will be able to see 10 different single-engine aircraft from Cessna, Cirrus, Diamond, Mooney and Piper.

Scenic and historic route nominations: County ready for program like one in state

PRESCOTT - A new countywide program could bring fame and recognition to some scenic and historic roads in Yavapai County.

In April, the Board of Supervisors approved the county Scenic/Historic Route Program, and the advisory committee is reviewing the county’s first road nomination.

“This is essentially a grass-roots program modeled after the state’s scenic and historic roads program,” said Chris Bridges, county transportation planner.

Ahwatukee’s concert band a big talent draw

The Ahwatukee Foothills Concert Band is a dream come true for 26-year Ahwatukee resident Crawford McClue, who founded the community musical group for musicians of all ages in 1991.

The band also is a source of joy to McClue, who celebrated his 98th birthday Wednesday , and still attends area concerts by the group.

“Having seen them when they first started, I’m amazed,” laughed McClue, a former organist listed in the band roster as “official kazoo player.”

The Prescott Film Festival & Series presents its next screening with the ever-pressing question “Paper or Plastic?”

The award-winning film, showing at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, at Frontier Village Cinemas, follows competitors from throughout the United States as they put in hours of training, go from local to regional contests, and finally the national competition in Las Vegas where they compete for the title of “Best Grocery Store Bagger.”

Roughrider Soccer Camp

Roughrider Soccer Camp is from 8:30 to 11 a.m. June 8 - 11 at Ken Lindley Field. Yavapai College soccer players conduct the camp for boys and girls ages 5 to 12. Cost is $75 per child and includes instruction, soccer ball, camp shirt and Roughrider souvenirs. Register by calling 777-1122 or sign up at the activity center, 824 E. Gurley St.

Prescott Senior Olympics

Prescott Parks and Recreation will hold Senior Olympics events for men and women 50 and older. Events are scheduled from July 10 through July 26. Trekabout Hiking Club

Trekabout Hiking Club meets from 8 to 9 a.m. every Tuesday and from 8 to 10 a.m. every Thursday for guided hikes. Locations vary and trails are rated from 1 to 4 for difficulty. The City of Prescott is sponsoring yoga classes by certified instructor Becky Lind. All levels are invited to participate in this activity that is practiced to develop strength and flexibility and to reduce stress. Classes are scheduled from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Grace Sparkes Community Center, 824 E. Gurley. Cost is $30 or $35, depending on sessions. Free admission to Heritage Park Zoo Saturday, May 30

Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary will say thank you to zoo supporters with free admission on Community Appreciation Day Saturday, May 30.

The zoo, home to 125-plus animals, plans animal encounters every hour, and docents will be available throughout the park to tell each animal’s special story. The zoo will be offering membership discounts, and concessions will be on hand for those who want to have lunch at the park.

The Prescott College Art Gallery in the Sam Hill Warehouse will feature work from the college’s first juried art exhibition April 3-17. Visiting artist Richard Notkin will discuss Art & War in a lecture at the gallery 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 1. Lunafest Film Festival highlights women filmmakers

The local showing of Lunafest, the fundraising film festival dedicated to promoting awareness about women’s issues, highlighting women filmmakers, and bringing women together in their communities, will take place for the third year at the Elks Opera House in Prescott, AZ on Friday, March 6th, 2009.This unique film festival will highlight women as leaders in society, illustrated through ten films by women filmmakers. The films range from animated shorts to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women’s health, body image, spirituality, relationships, cultural diversity, and breaking barriers.

Karate Classes

The City of Prescott Parks and Recreation is offering a family-oriented karate class suitable for ages five and up, held 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday at Miller Valley School. Cost is $40 per month and uniforms are required (not included in the cost). Classes are ongoing month to month, allowing for advancement. Register at the Recreation office at 824 E. Gurley St.

Acker Trust Grant

The City of Prescott is now accepting grant applications from eligible non-profit organizations that promote “music and parks, especially for the children of Prescott,” for funding for fiscal year 2010 (July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010). Hiking Beyond 50

The Prescott Valley Public Library and the Central Arizona Senior Association are offering a workshop for seniors by Ted Johnson, who has hiked the southwestern wilderness since 1975. The group explores age-appropriate destinations and discusses how to prepare, what to take, and what to do when an unexpected problem turns into an overnight ordeal. Hikes are scheduled the last Saturday of each month through April. The next hike is 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 28 and is a four-mile trek in the Agua Fria stream bed. Call 759-3090 for more information.

Youth Arts Month

The Town of Prescott Valley will collect and display works of art from artists in grades K through 12 in the Civic Center. Prescott Valley Parks and Recreation is offering French language classes instructed by Nadia Clark. Clark will instruct a five-class session for beginners and an advanced class for ages 16 and older. The one-hour beginning-level class is 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays at the Bradshaw Mountain High School west campus, room D206. The advanced class is offered the same dates from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Dates for Session III are April 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. Cost is $30.
